This adult role serves as a manager for our worship services, ensuring that the church is made ready for liturgies. Sacristans are the first to arrive at a Mass and the last to leave. This lay ministry is open to men and women.
Common Sacristan duties include:
Preparing the liturgical materials prior to a Mass: Lectionary, Roman Missal, Book of Gospels, Prayers of the Faithful, Mass Intentions, and announcements;
Setting the Credence Table with the cruets, chalices, ciboria, linens, and other items for that particular Mass;
Work closely with the priest, deacons, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers, readers, and ushers/greeters to organize each liturgy.
Additional responsibilities include:
Ability to maintain confidentiality, manage responsibilities, and work independently;
Ability to communicate and work well with all lay ministers;
Ability to adapt to challenges and changes in routine.
Sacristans are trained by other sacristans. All sacristans attend a Protecting God's Children Class and maintain on-going compliance with the monthly online Virtus Training Bulletins. Sacristans are assigned to a Mass at a church of their choosing and serve at one to two Masses per month.
